With its sweet, nutty yet sharp flavour, Gouda Cheese is definitely a winner with a glass of Merlot and side fruits. It is of a Dutch Origin, and named after their city of Gouda in the province of Zuid-Holland. Whilst pronounced “Goo-duh” in English, the Dutch pronounce a starting “g” as “h”, so it’s actually “how-da”! Normal, smoked or aged, it’s always a ‘Gouda Time’!
Originating from the village of Cheddar in 12th Century Somerset England, Cheddar is now the most widely purchased and eaten cheese in the world. It’s smooth when young and oh-so-crumbly when aged; great for whatever your preference! Pair with a strong ale or a Cab Sauvignon to indulge your tastebuds!
Fun-fact; Queen Victoria even received an enormous Cheddar wheel (453 kgs!) as a wedding gift.
From Reggio Emilia in Italia, Parmigiano Reggiano is best to stir in soup, risotto and for grating over pasta dishes for a nuttier taste than Pecorino. If you are feeling fancy, try making a mouth-watering eggplant or chicken parmigiana! But be careful in the shopping aisle; Parmesan is usually an imitation of authentic Parmigiano Reggiano.
This Spanish cheese from the La Mancha region is a showstopper. Made from sheep’s milk and usually aged between sixty days to two years, this sharp-tasting firm cheese is high in protein and melts to perfection. Try it with Olives, Fig jam or a nut-brown ale for the fullest taste!
Hunter Belle Dairy bring the Swiss Gruyere style cheese right into Australia with a twist. This raw milk cheese is fruity on first taste, but then delivers an earthy and nutty sensation in your mouth! This sweet aroma is perfect with a side of grapes or walnuts, and we love supporting our local cheese makers!
